I have a very wide and varied film taste. In terms of the writing of my first script and film direction and ultimately the birth of New Beginnings Productions, it would be fair to say it came to be from what I’d call a human relational and psychological component predominantly.
As I wrote in other blogs, it was films like Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive which were particular influences and inspirations. I remember shortly after the passing of David Lynch I listened to a YouTube video saying how they felt he was the equivalent of Psychiatrist ‘Carl Jung’ if his career had been films.
This made total sense to me in the way that Lynch was able to display human connection and vulnerability, psychological processes, and the dream spaces. These films naturally connected to me and my background in Psychology and Counselling and my interest in human development.
My interest in dreams has become stronger over the years to see them as a constant interacting part and inspiration and connection to waking life so I think films which show this space as part of human experience are important.
I’ve always enjoyed films which show some level of a struggle with identity and figuring out over time what is real. The Truman Show always stood out for me as a man noticing the incongruences around him and ultimately moving to set himself free. Vanilla Sky I always thought was great too in showing Tom Cruise move through his own narcissism and his regret at what he did wrong. Probably the scene towards the end of that film with him and Penelope Cruz on the roof had some inspiration for me and the dialogue between our characters.
I do have wide ranging film tastes and sometimes just love watching things which are light, energetic and alive. I’m never one to purely take all I watch 100% seriously. I’m happy to be open about where New Beginnings Productions goes as an overall direction but the films mentioned here more specifically around identity and the moving through something and the moving to being free and to truth is certainly what I can say is currently feels central to me and New Beginnings Productions, it certainly has been for Dream End.
